My experiences with curriculum development

I am really looking forward to this class because I feel as though I have little experience with curriculum development.  When I taught 6th grade science I worked with a team of other 6th grade science teachers and other teachers in the department.  I never felt stranded or as if I were alone planning our curriculum.  I always enjoyed the support and great ideas from my colleagues, but I wonder if it hindered my skills in curriculum development.

In my current position with the college, I am responsible for a seminar class for first year students.  This year was my first year in the position, so I followed the curriculum that has been used in the past.  But after receiving feedback from students and instructors I am planning on updating and changing a few things around with the curriculum for next fall.

  1. Erin,

I feel the same way in the excitement of this class in learning more about curriculum development. I have had an opportunity to develop a new course for UMF that was approved and is currently being taught this semester. In that experience, I really enjoyed the faculty member that I worked with and felt that we both had a great deal to contribute to the development of the course. As I move forward in my work at UMF, I am looking at collaborating once again with a faculty member to develop a new course. I wish you the best of luck in your venture of redesigning the first year seminar that you teach. I would think that having some feedback from previous students would be beneficial in the development process.

  2. First year college seminar and 6th grade science seem miles apart, but I guess it still is all about bringing the students from Point A to Point B. The curriculum is the map to do it. I am also looking forward to learning more about curriculum development.

  3. Hey E., this would be a great opportunity to try out the curriculum development process as we study it...and as you improve the first-year COEHD seminar. So...where are you going to start? Who will you gather data from? What plan do you have for the process?
