Usually I am not very politically active and wouldn't blog about political issues. However, the union issue in Wisconsin and Ohio has really gotten my attention. I enjoy the humor of John Stewart and Stephen Colbert. I found this video to be funny and very true.
I saw this episode while I was on vacation (in the hotel in Ft. Lauderdale). It was the first time I had heard about it!!! My husband was trying to fall asleep and I was SHAKING him like, "Devon! OMG! What IS this!? Agggghhhhh!!!"
ReplyDeleteI did a little research on it and I still don't fully understand it, but it sounds BAD!!! Isn't LePage talking about changing pensions and such too?
From what I read this week, LePage, is going to make employees pay more into their pension. I haven't read anything about him going after unions.
ReplyDeleteThis is my understanding. In Ohio, Senate Bill 5, will still allow unions bargain for wages, hours and most working conditions, but not pensions. Thus creating a risk for pensions to be affected. Currently teachers are forced to join a union, I believe this will become optional.
In Wisconsin, I am not as clear as to what they are doing. I think it is very similar. I think Ohio maybe voting on it today.
Unfortunately all of this makes the occupation of teacher become less of an aspiration for people looking to go into the field. I think it ties in with what I have read in the book "drive" which states to have the type I persona there needs to be an adequate baseline of compensation for motivated action.
