I am glad that I am working in the education field, I don't know what I would do if there was ever a year that I didn't somehow get to experience the wonderful first day of school.

First Week of Class!
It is amazing how the first week of school has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. First, I experienced the first days of the school year as many of you did, in the role of the student. Even though it did progress from elementary, middle, and high school, the first day of school was always the same. Then there were the first days of school as a college student, still nervous and excited after years of experience with the first day. Then I was able to experience the first days of school as a teacher. I taught 6th grade Science. The middle school started with the 6th grade and I loved seeing my sixth graders walk into school, so nervous and timid. Then watching them grow and change as the school year progressed. After a few years I decided to go back to school full time to get my master's degree. So I was able to once again experience those first days of the school year again as the student. Now in my current position, I am still able to enjoy the first days of school but as an academic advisor for education majors at the University of Maine. I also teach a course titled New Student Seminar, for first year students. Even though there is a big age difference between 6th graders and first year college students, there are many similarities in the students on that first day of school.

It will be interesting to note the similarities to your FY students in seminar (and those whom you advise) this year. I agree...lots of similarities to 6th graders...as they enter a new environment. For many UMaine students, Orono is a big place with lots of new things to learn and processes to navigate.
